Upon arriving in Brisbane, I had forgotten a large part of the reason I had come to Australia. I’ve been in Brisbane nearly two weeks now, on the hunt for a form of income to support my traveling and whatever else happens to pop up. It has been a long time since I have had to look for a job and for some reason, I don’t ever remember it being this hard! It has been a somewhat grueling couple of weeks.
This morning as I was leaving the office (that would be the library which has free wifi. I go there everyday for at least a couple of hours to search the web for jobs, catch up on emails and talk to family via google video chat, its wonderful!), I had a revelation of sorts. I was not feeling well and on top of that feeling a bit discouraged that I was having such a hard time finding work. Out of no where it hit me, that I didn’t come to Australia to “work” I came here to explore the country and the local communities and people, to see the parts that not a lot of people see. I’m not a backpacker (that lifestyle is just too much for me). I am a nomad, wandering the continent in hopes of being inspired and enlightened and then attempting to share what I experience with friends and family and strangers a like through the eye of my camera and the ink my pen leaks...onto my computer ;)
I am staying in Brisbane for just a few more days, then I am off to Russell Island Monday morning, which is about 25 kms east of Brissie, but will take me about 2 hours to get there. At first I go by train, then catch a bus, then a ferry to this little island in Morton Bay, to begin my first WWOOF-ing experience! I couldn’t be more excited! I am going to a very small island to live for about a week...maybe more. I will be doing a bit of gardening and odd jobs around the property. I may also get to help my host, Dianne make soap, wine and mosaic creations!
This is what I came here to do. Experience new things in life in beautiful places. I’m excited to relax in an actual house....maybe even take a bath, lounge on a couch and watch the tube (its been a while since I’ve done any of those things!). I’m also excited to explore the island (all 8 kms of it) and do some photo snappin’ and share them with you folks. Maybe write some poetry or think about how I can begin the process of writing a book...
Hopefully this experience will be good and will be something that I can continue to do throughout the country so I can stay as long as possible on the funds I have now. If I am able to find a job at some point, that would be good, but I am not going to fret about it, just simply trust that what ever comes along will be for the best.
