Come Sail Away

Sailing the Whitsunday Islands has quite possibly been my favorite adventure so far.  There was so much time to think and just be, basking in the amazing beauty that is here for all to see.

We were pretty fortunate to have semi decent weather, considering its the rainy season here in the tropics!  We did get a bit of rain.  But it did not fail to be sunny on Sunday in the Whitsunday's (sorry for the cheese there!).

Saturday afternoon 26 of us boarded the little sail boat called Avatar.  It did rain for a little bit, but that just made it all that much easier for me to go snorkeling for the first time, since I was already wet!  I was a little nervous at first, but managed to do okay.

Snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef is something I will attempt to describe with words.  It. was. ah. mazing!!  Even though it was a bit of a rainy day, I could see so clearly all of the wonderful little creatures under the sea.  The fish are everywhere, every shape, every size and every color you can possibly imagine.  They seemed completely undisturbed by the presence of humans in stinger suits and funny things on their faces.  I felt accepted and welcome in the sea.  As for the coral...this...this was something completely unlike I’ve ever experienced.  Again beautiful colors, but even more amazing was the way it moved.  It was ALIVE!  It seemed to dance with the music of the deep sea and sway the way you can only imagine in dreams.  I am at a loss for words as to how breath taking an experience this was.

Sunday morning was a bit of a cloudy day in the morning with a bit of drizzle, which was  not the most exciting thing to wake up to if you knew you were going to the beach that day.  But I prayed all night and all morning and wouldn’t you know it, the sun came out and greeted us with in all her glory!  She did keep many of her big cotton puff cloud friends around for most of the day, but I didn’t mind, they just helped make for an even more amazing backdrop to enjoy the beautiful, soft, white sandy beach called Whitehaven.

Its Monday afternoon and I couldn’t be more glad to be on solid ground again!  The sea, beaches, islands and snorkeling were quite a sight, but my feet, my bum, and complete lack of showering for the past three days and I am more than ready to be on land.  The boat was pretty neat, but the surface we had to walk and sit on a lot sure toughens up your feet quickly and leaves your bum dyeing for a cushion!  And sleeping....oh to sleep in a bed again will be fantastic!  Although, you can’t quite beat sleeping underneath the stars and above the sea...with nothing but a trampoline type net between you.  The moon was so bright and mystical.

The Whitsunday’s, a place I would say everyone must see once.  And I guess you all will...through my pictures you can find here
