30 in Sydney

Turning thirty was quite an exciting milestone birthday for me.  I’ve been excited about this birthday for quite sometime because it is a new beginning of sorts.  New adventures to be had, places to see, people to meet, things to experience.  Life is too short to be concerned with numbers and looking back and regretting the past and all the things you never did.  I look at the thirty as moving forward.  And so here I am in Australia, moving forward.

I had plenty of miserable birthdays in the past, minus 29 (Thanks Trinh, Kim & Mary!).  Celebrating a new chapter in life with complete strangers seemed like a fun option this year, and I think it was a good choice!

I woke up at about 7:00 am the morning of my birthday.  All of my roommates, whom I had just met the day before, were sound asleep.  I left the room to go get ready for the day, when I came back they were all still sleeping.  I went over to the window to peek at the weather.  When I turned around, the three of them were all sitting up in there beds and started singing Happy Birthday!  THEN, they pulled some cupcakes out of a locker and we had a little birthday picnic on the floor of our room in the hostel.  I was completely blown away.  That was so sweet of them!  I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to start the two day celebration of day I was born.

I celebrated my Australian birthday and my American birthday.  The day after my Australian birthday, some of my other friends got me a chocolate cake.  And I got a ton of really fun birthday messages on facebook and emails as well.

It was a wonderful day indeed and a great way to start a new decade!
